Sharks and crabs can be friends?
For this session, we read a two part passage together about whether or not a shark and a crab could be friends. Before reading the passage, my tutee decide the answer was no. I could tell he thought the idea was silly to consider. I modeled for him the "take a breath" pause after punctuations for clarity when we read. I also modeled for him that certain punctuations require a voice change (i.e. question mark, exclamation point). Now it was time to read, he decided that he would be the shark, and I would be the crab. I get it, he was thinking the shark would eat the crab. Not so. The shark found himself in a net and guess who rescued him? Yep! The crab. So, they could be friends after all. My tutee picked up on my voice changes, causing the passage to come alive, he started to do like wise. When he realized the crab was the hero of the passage, he wanted to switch roles and be the sweet crab to the rescue.
