After our usual vocabulary lesson, Dojun and I began with our writing lesson as planned. However, it was more difficult than expected due to the fact that I was administering it through Skype. Seeing as it would be difficult for me to grade something he actually wrote, I had thought that he could just type his response to the prompt on Microsoft Word but I had forgotten that anything he typed would be underlined if he made a mistake. I didn't want him to focus on his mistakes, as this would be a timed assignment, and his main objective would be communication and fluency. Regardless, Skype itself lacks the blue lines which address a grammatical error. So I had him promise to not pay much attention to spelling or grammatical errors, and only focus on providing as much detail as he could to his supporting reasons for his thesis. He had 10 minutes to explain why South Korea was one of the best countries to live in. At first when we discussed the topic Dojun smiled and said that he didn't not think that South Korea was the best country. "Not even ONE of the best? Do you wanna write about why it is the worst country??" I asked jokingly. He laughed and said that he supposed it wasn't terrible, and would take the challenge of voicing the opposing side of his views. What he produced I have copied below. Before having him read aloud I explained that he should be able to correct himself as he speaks by monitoring his words. Through this method he was able to realize and immediately correct a lot of his mistakes. Since he is advanced, I nit picked his sentences primarily on punctuation and sentence structure. In the end, we laughed about how sophisticated and developed his first two reasons were and how his reason for number three was so short and sweet due to lack of time. However, I noticed that he had a pattern in which he omitted his indefinite and definite articles. I told him we would review this in depth for our next lesson but that he should be very proud of his work.

South Korea is one of best country in the world

1.     First of all South Korea made a success in economy in very short time.

Actually South Korea was one of the poorest country in Asia. But they made a miracle in a few decades.

2.     South Korea had a lot of great people who did independent movement while they were taken by Japan. Many people protested to Japan and were sacrificed for their independence and eventually we made it.

3.     South Korea has many beautiful mountains.
