Danielle CO#3
On 9/15, I observed Professor Wilson's level 1 listening class. I observed them taking their test, which made up of both direct and indirect testing. There was a fill in the blank section, as well as a matching section. The majority of the test required students to answer questions based on what the Professor Wilson was saying and a short audio that he played. One section of the test involved students using symbols such as @ and w/o to in their sentences to replace the words they stand for. I thought this was really interesting because it's something I never would have thought to test, yet symbols in the English language are very important to know. Most of the students seemed to be able to finish the test without any major difficulties, but the three foundations level students were obviously struggling a lot more. Something I noticed in his class was that he was very animated and constantly used facial expressions and gestures to help his students understand what he was saying. He also drew some pictures up on the board. Overall, it was a good class to observe. We talked briefly after class about the challenges of a beginner and/or foundations class.
