On 9/21, I met again with Astin. I spent the first few minutes discussing his mother his evaluations from school. She informed me that Astin is excellent in reading, but the report said that he struggled a lot with phonetics, writing, and spelling, and I agreed with her as I have also noticed these patterns while tutoring him. We started by reading a book, as we usually do, and then moved onto the workbooks that his mother brought with them. We spent some time in the phonetic workbook and doing activities that consisted of words that have the same sound at the end. Another pattern of his that I have picked on is that he's generally good at sounded out phonetic sounds of unfamiliar words, but he struggles with connecting them all together to form the word. This will be an area of focus in our next tutoring session. Afterwards, we moved on to some writing exercises. The activities consisted of him writing simple sentences. However, he introduced me to a game of his, which I assume he learned in school, which basically has a bunch of words in a word bank and then the student has to put words together to form complete sentences. We did this for a while and he seemed to really enjoy it.
