Date/Time: September 15, 7:00-8:30pm
Location: The Sweet Shop
Topic discussed: stereotypes, current global issues, school systems, gender
differences
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Deniz
printed out the handout that Jen Dickinson had emailed us to provide ideas for our
conversation. The handout focused on stereotypes and generalizations that are
made about people of various cultures. One aspect that Deniz asked me about was
why Americans typically leave the house when they are 18. I asked Deniz what
positive and negative stereotypes there are about Turkish people. He told me
that they are known for being brave but also known for being procrastinators.
When we compared school systems from each of our cultures we found there were
quite a bit of similarities. The only major difference we found was how the
public and private schools compare to one another in Turkey versus America. We
also spoke about how gender roles were prominent in each of our cultures from
occupations to expectations on how one should act. I was surprised to hear that
women in Turkey had more equal rights than I would’ve assumed. However with
talking with Deniz, it has definitely opened up my eyes to how different his
culture is to the negative way Middle-easterners are portrayed in the media.
