Shaimaa TS #2

Date/time: Friday, 9/9, 5pm

Location: Eliya's House

I met with my child tutee, Eliya, today. It was a bit strange, because there was no parent at the house, and there were 5 little boys. I was unsure of whether or not I should go in at all. As expected, his english was fairly minimal. He mainly just said "yes" a lot, even when he didn't understand what I was asking. At first I had a hard time figuring out how to get and keep his attention and actually keep him engaged. I had to figure out which words he understood and which he didn't. In the end I realized that his english skills were minimal enough that he did not know the words for different colors, so I decided to focus on that. I asked him what the color various things were around the room, and then wrote the colors down on a piece of paper for him. I tried to ask him what the corresponding word was in Swahili, but he did not know all the exact translations, so that part did not go as well. I just continued to quiz based on things around the room, and said that I would ask him about this again next time. I think I will print out some basic worksheets that I can work on with him, like something that has all the colors. I also said I would go over fruits next week.
