David and I’s first tutoring session was an overall success.
I began by getting to know him non-academically. I learned that he was from
Tallahassee, Florida, but that he preferred Orlando because of Universal
Studios. David likes to spend his time playing video games, hanging out with
his twin brother, and watching YouTube videos. For this reason I believe that
YouTube videos and articles about video games (especially Star Wars
Battlefront) would be interesting for him to work with in our sessions. He is fluent
in Korean as a result of his home life and years in Korean school. David said
that he also knew how to speak a little bit of Spanish, French, and even
Australian (mate). I knew from that point on that David was a jokester with a
profound sense of humor. Although this makes our lessons more enjoyable, it is
important to keep on track as well. Regardless, I could tell from his speech
that he was advanced in speaking English. He breezed through the multiple
choice grammar tests, read the passage from The Giver and answered the comprehension
questions with ease. However, there were two things I noticed about David in
the writing portion of my evaluation. The first fact being that David hates
writing. Although He completed the paragraph on “My Favorite Place,” it was
very informal and written with many pauses for disruptions. That’s when his
brother Matthew, whom had already completed his lesson, came to the table. Time
was almost up but it became difficult to keep them from using the other as a
distraction. Therefore, I will be making sure to keep David’s session in a
different part of the Library to keep him focused.
