Megan TS#4

To make sure that the vocabulary words we go over are within but just outside of Dojun's level of difficulty, I have him tell me his exposure to the words in a verbal K-W-L fashion. He either doesn't know the word, knows of it but doesn't really understand the full meaning/how it functions in a sentence, or knows the definition/synonym. If he is right, I encourage him by stating more synonyms and definitions. If he is wrong, or doesn't know the word, I guide him through an explanation in which I give him opportunities to restate his understanding of the word. Although he had heard of the word "alter," he was not completely sure what the true definition was of "alternative." He knew alter as a verb of changing something. In this case, I explained that the root word "alter" means "other" and the word "alternative" basically means some other available possibility. I told him that knowing how to infer meaning from words from the context of the words themselves is a useful skill to acquire in learning a language, I told him that "ego" meant self, so when we say "alter ego" we know that this means "other self," or an alternative identity. We then began reviewing the parts of speech and Dojun read each definition aloud. Next, we took turns coming up with our own example sentences, During this exchange I asked him questions using the vocab and encouraged Dojun to answer the questions using what he knows from personal experience. In this way he would form a connection with the words by associating them to concrete parts of his life in which he would need to know them to explain his thoughts in English. If his sentences needed guidance in structure I would help frame it for him to give his response. For example, "The most prominent person in South Korea is ______ because _________." He would then repeat himself with his own thoughts. To conclude, I had him write yes or no responses explaining his reasoning to questions using the words. Then I had him read the sentences allowed to give him an opportunity to correct himself and to allow me to listen to pronunciation errors to correct and beautiful mistakes to go over with him after he finished reading
