Today I went to Eliya's house for tutoring. I felt very good about it because I prepared various materials to go over with him. Since his english is extremely elementary, he needs to start building a vocabulary. I printed out handouts of tons of vocabulary groupings such as colors and fruits and clothing. Those are the three we went over during this session. He is one of five brothers in that house, and actually all his siblings gathered around the table and started following along too, as did his mother. I believe they all felt like this lesson was indeed very helpful. I put together these handouts as well as ones I intend to use in the future all into a folder with prongs, and let him keep it so that he could study even without me. His mother really appreciated that. Something I hadn't anticipated, and this is totally my shortcoming, is that he does need help reading as well. Once I realized it, we practiced that too. The word for many things are written below pictures, and I would have him read those words without pictures or anything, sounding out the letters. For vocabulary, I would introduce the different words alongside the pictures, then have him repeat after me. I would go over all of the words twice, and then start asking him what various things were while covering up the word for it. He caught on quickly, he is so bright. There were a few things he had trouble with remembering, but I believe he will improve with every session.
