Date/Time: Wednesday, September 14th, 6:30pm.
Location: Tutee's home, West Pensacola Street
Topic/Skill: Confirmation of alphabet, phonics, sight words
During this visit Tiba and I ventured into the realm of reading and sounding out words. We started with alphabet review, then sight word and phonics flash cards. We also played some simple matching and order games with the letters and sounds, and wrapped up by reading sentences together. By covering up portions of longer words as she reads them, I'm encouraging her to see words as syllables so she can sound out each part, concentrating on one sound at a time. Comprehension is still developing, but memorization is progressing relatively well.
Feedback provided to tutee:
Lots of sound coaching and encouragement, as always. Tiba is very good about catching her mistakes when we do worksheets or matching games. When the occasional error is overlooked, redirection or a short wait for her to seek it out works very well.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
Tutoring continues to reinforce that it's important to constantly re-assess Tiba's knowledge, and to keep in mind that skills develop at different speeds. Her memorization of the alphabet and sound recognition may appear underdeveloped, but then she'll surprise me by reading an entire sentence with minimal error. There is no catch-all quantification of her level, and I need to remember to address skills individually so I'm not holding her back with the assumption that skill in one area is a determiner of skill in all areas. This will also help me attend to areas where she needs improvement.
