For my first meeting with Veronika Kakozi I went to her
apartment where she lives with her family which consists of her mother, father,
brothers, and sisters. They all spoke Swahili and some spoke French from what I
collected. I did a interview with Veronika and asked her about why she wanted
to learn English and about what she was learning in school to gauge what she
was doing. I also looked to see if she had any homework assigned or anything
like that for me to help her with. I her classes she had been learning about
greetings so we looked at a video together about different greetings in English
which was a cartoon where the characters use the greetings. I had her practice
speaking them and explained simple situations where you would use the greeting.
Her father told me she understands more than she can speak but she is afraid to
speak sometimes. This was my first experience tutoring someone in this fashion
and it showed me the barriers of communication that exist. I also noticed that
the tone of my voice was important in how Veronika responded to my feedback and
guidance. I also think I was speaking too quickly and using words that might
not have been useful in the situation.
