My third class observation was a level 3 speaking
class. This class was very interesting for me since they focused on debate
style of speech. The class was broken up into three groups of 4-5 people and
given prompts to discuss. Each group had a recorder for the professor to listen
to the conversations later and give more detailed feedback. The students were
given phrases to use such as; in my opinion, I do not agree with the topic
presented because, and others. The topics were mostly controversial ones such
as the legality of marijuana and divorce. Each group had a moderator who
would direct the conversation and present a conclusion at the end. As the
students were discussing the topics the professor walked around and took notes
on his phone to then discuss with the class between topics. The main points he
discussed were focused on how much certain students spoke or good pointes he
heard brought up as well as certain general aspects the groups needed to work
on.
