On Monday the 12th of September I met with Shu at 3:30 in the
CIES. His midterm week was coming up so I decided to help him with his
presentations. I asked him to prepare what he would be giving a speech on in
one of his classes. When we met, he ran through his presentation on the triple
disaster in Fukushima during 2011. His time was nine minutes when the upper
limit was seven. While he spoke I took notes, he had a lot of agreement errors
as well as word order errors. The idea was clearly conveyed, with the exception
of two points which I asked him to clarify later. After the first run through I
gave him my feedback and worked with him to make it smoother. He then gave the
presentation a second time, this one was much more confident and with fewer
errors. The time was also reduced to seven minutes and thirty seconds. We had
to cut this session a few minutes short since he had to leave but I think he
improved greatly.
I also spoke to
him about NPR which I had introduced to him last time. He had a very positive response
to it, he told me that he listened to the stories while he cooked or did chores
around the house. I have decided to ask him to choose a story a specific story
and listen to it. I will then ask him to summarize it followed by a critical discussion
of the piece.
