Feedback provided to
tutee: As always I checked with Dojun to make sure he felt that our sessions
have been effective and helpful for him. The situation is obviously different
for him than CIES students because his only exposure to English on a daily
basis is the hour he gets with each of his tutors over the course of the week.
Lesson(s) about tutoring
and/or the tutee you learned: This session we talked about differences in
customs and religion between Korea and America. Dojun explained that he had
celebrated Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving, since the last session we had. He
described to me the specifics to how Koreans celebrate on this day by having a
giant feast of traditional foods as well as paying respect to deceased elders. During
this conversation we compared and contrasted Korean holidays and American
holidays. He explained that with Chuseok it occurs on a specific date so Koreans
prefer it to occur on a Tuesday or Thursday to maximize the amount of days they
get off of work. He also explained that the lunar New Year was another much
anticipated holiday in Korean culture. I taught him the word diversity and
races as we discussed Korean openness to different races and religions as well.
