Danielle TS#6
On Friday, 9/16, I met with Maritza at Starbucks to help her with reduced adjective clauses. At first, I had no idea what she was talking about because I was never taught "reduced adjective clauses" as a kid. But after I saw her classwork, I knew what she was talking about, but actually explaining it to her was a little bit tricky. I wasn't sure how to explain it to her because no one ever explained it to me. It was just one of the grammar rules I knew "because it's right." This made me think a little bit about all of the English grammar rules and how many of them I would actually be able to explain off the top of my head if asked by a student and motivated me to study English grammar on my own so I can be better prepared for these situations in the future. In addition, we also did some TOEFL preparations. She is planning on taking the TOEFL exam at the end of this session, so we discussed some areas of concern for her and what we could do to better prepare her for the exam. One area that stuck out to me was that she doesn't always remember to use an S at the end of plural words, even though she knows she's supposed to. She seems to use it in her writing, but not always in her speech. Also, we briefly reviewed a reading passage she got in class, but ran out of time to go into more detail. At our next session, we're planning on doing some reading and listening activities that she will be tested on.
