I met with Xinbin
on Friday the 16th. He had a specific topic in mind this time which was
shopping in America. This is his first time in the U.S. and has is unfamiliar
with American shopping methods and cultures such as finding deals, haggling,
sales. I told him that haggling is not a common practice unless you are buying
from another person and not a store or company. We also had a discussion on the
practices of retailers who mark up their products to give the image of a larger
savings when they have "seasonal discounts" or "super
sales". He was looking to buy a Mac Book Pro since his current laptop is
too heavy to carry around with him on campus. An interesting tidbit I learned
was that google and Facebook have been banned in china within the last few
years. They use alternate Chinese sites instead. Sadly, we had to cut the
meeting a bit short since he had made plans to meet with a friend for lunch, he
offered me to join them but I had to decline. I still had multiple meetings on
campus shortly after our session.
