Danielle TS#8

On 9/23, I met again with Martiza.  She is taking the TOEFL exam in a few weeks, and so we spent our session today preparing for the exam. I used the rubrics provided by Professor Kim to help guide her in the right direction. We started off with independent speaking. She is a very fluent and very accurate English speaker.  However, she struggles a little bit when put on the spot, so this was a little difficult for her. She understood all of the topics and what she was supposed to do, but would take long pauses here and there, which ate up a lot of her time. Because of this, the timer would run out before she was done. When she tried to fit all of her thoughts in in 45 seconds, I noticed that she had a few pronunciation issues. This is something we plan to work on in our next session and will hopefully be able to find a comfortable balance for her. In addition, we also practiced integrated writing and did the example given to her in her textbook.  Overall, her writing is very good with the exception of a few minor grammar errors. Her biggest mistakes here included an incomplete sentence and a made up word; but she did very well overall.  We will continue with more TOEFL prep at our next tutoring session.
