Jamie TS#4

Date/Time: Wednesday, September 21th, 6:30pm.
Location: Tutee's home, West Pensacola Street
Topic/Skill: Vowel/Consonant combinations, reading.
This week, Tiba and I went over the sounds of vowels and consonants when they are paired, such as ae, ee, th, ch, sh. We also read a moderate length book about words in Swahili (written in English). I chose this material hoping it would be encouraging to see Swahili and English combined, and because I was curious about how far her reading has developed. For the most part I read aloud, moving my finger underneath words as I pronounced them for her to follow. At least once per page I'd pause and signal Tiba to try reading a word that looked level appropriate or a little above.
Feedback provided to tutee: As Tiba worked through handouts on the sound combinations, I modeled the sounds for her to repeat. I also encouraged her to make the sound as she wrote. Hopefully the combination of physical action, verbal action, and visualizing the pair will help it to stick in her memory.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: The book that I chose gave me some pause as we went through it, though I had reviewed it beforehand. By observing her reactions, at times I felt that the content was too elementary for Tiba, and at other times that the text itself may have been too advanced. Though my goal was just to have her hear the sounds words made as her eyes followed along, this session helped me consider what specific components I want a resource material to contain and accomplish.
